|

I shoot with Nikons which in the RAW format create what they call NEF files.
When I try to open them , I get the following message:
" Could not open .NEF becasue of a program error "
I have determined that if go to the Open file I can get it open, provided I know the exact dimensions of the image, but this is slow and cumbersome.
How can I set it up so that the images simply open in the NEF format? |

It depends on what Nikon camera. Photoshop 7 only takes a Raw Converter plug-in, which you have to buy from Adobe. And it may not support your specific camera.
Nikon offers a RAW converter, but I think it costs $100 or so. You could upgrade to CS2 with built-in ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) or purchase PS Elements, again for around $100. But Adobe is dragging its feet on an upgrade for a Mac version of Elements.
Check the Adobe site to see what version of ACR will support your specific camera and what version of Photoshop is needed to support that version of ACR.
(what a headache!)
edit- my little rant:
(RAW is not really a format, and NEF is a proprietary Nikon format. Adobe has been trying to get camera companies to adopt a standard, public format for their RAW files: DNG (the Digital negative format). They have meant some resistance, especially from Nikon. Nikon encrypts some data in a NEF files, making companies, such as Adobe, jump through deciphering hoops to convert their RAW files. A standardized raw format, like DNG, would benefit many photographers as an archival format tool so images can stored and read decades from now.) |
