Having trouble with my Photoshop 7. When I want to use the Brightness/Contrast adjustment within the Image/Adjustment section the scroll bars for brightness/contrast do not come up. An eyedropper tool appears. When this happens I can only click on the image and change the color squares on the left in the tools area. I can't even close the image or close the program. I have to Alt/ctrl/delete to close the program. I've also uninstalled the program & reloaded but this problem continues.
Can someone please help?

Well, I did find that the sliders for the brightness/contrast are not showing themselves. I have the same program on another computer and the sliders show up on it along with the eyedropper. I just can't get the sliders to show. What's with the ability to not be able to close the image after clicking on adjustments and brightness/contrast?

The whole dialog window is not there? Might be off screen. Try resetting your palette location (Window>Workspace>Reset Palette Locations)
Or trash your preferences: Hold down the Shift+Alt+Control (Shift+Option+Command on Mac) AS you launch Photoshop. You’ll get a dialog to delete your PS settings. |

Yes, I have seen this and similar things happen. Do what cbadland said and trash your settings. Some how, you've (or somebody else) has moved the box with the sliders on it off the screen, and you can't get it back unless you reset your preferences. Should work no problem.

First of all why in gods name are you using the Brightness/Contrast tool? Levels and or curves is a much more refined way to go. The Brightness/Contrast is like a slegdehammer and levels tool is like a knife and the curves tool is like a scaupal for doing adjusting work. Take my word for it. The people who did the movie "Star Wars episodes 1, 2 and 3" by George Lucas would aggree with me because they used Photoshop at ILM in "Star Wars."

Qubert, if I knew as much about Photoshop as you I probably wouldn't be using brightness/contrast. I am new to this program and am fumbling my way thru with the great help of this forum.
I found if I use the magic wand on the black dog (that has no definition) I could specify only the black dog among the perfectly lit people and bring out his form, via the brightness tool, without changing the rest of the picture. I am still experimenting and will try your suggestions.
Oh, and to answer your first question... cuz it's there!

If it works for you and you like the results, go for it. Every one has to start somewhere, and has to learn through trial and error, George Lucas included. Personally, I like the brightness/contrast option. I never use the brightness part of it, but I do use the contrast part on practicaly every picture that I print, as it "enhances" the photo quite nicely. Not to mention that it's a lot faster than the levels or curves options, while on the other hand, both levels and curves are offer more defined results, they consume more time.
Keep hacking away at photoshop, you'll be a pro in no time flat
