I keep getting the error 'Could not initialize Photoshop becuase there is not enough memory (RAM)'. I just closed out of Photoshop one day and this error popped up when I tried opening it again. I can't understand what I could have possibly done to make this happen. I tried turning off programs that were using up a lot of memory, but no dice. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Nothing. What's going on here?
I'm using Photoshop 7.0 and I'm running Windows XP.
How much ram does your system have? Please be specific as possible, meaning don't say "1 gig". Instead say, 2 sticks of 512, or 1 stick of 1 gig or 2 sticks of 256. Reason being is that you may have a bad stick of ram, or worst case scenario, you've got a bad dimm slot, or you might have a stick that not's completely seated right. I've seen all three happen. Right off the bat, the first thing I'd do it to uninstall photoshop completely, do a search for "*adobe" (minus the " ") and delete everything that is related to photoshop. Then, do another search for "*photoshop" and delete again. Retart your computer and then reinstall photoshop. You can also run a "mem test" (do a google search on it), which might tell you if you've got a bad stick or not. You can also try removing both sticks (or 1 stick depending on your set up) and re-seating them. Try photoshop again. If it persists, take out 1 stick, and try photoshop again. If it works, then you've got a bad stick. Toss it and replace it. If it doesn't work, then put that stick back in and remove the other one and hope for better results.
Let us know if this works for you or not, and we can go from there.
Hope this helps. _________________ All gave some, some gave all.....Lest we forget that war produces veterans, wounded both mentally and physically, and it is our job to help them now, as they have already helped us all in ways we will never know, and in ways that we take for granted every day.
Dell DIMENSION 8400
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz
3.39 GHz, 512 MB of RAM
I tried running a Memtest thing, but I didn't find anything wrong. I can't figure out why it would just all of a sudden stop functioning. When I try running it it starts to load, it brings up the loading screen and loads some stuff and all that crap, but just when it should start, it gives me an error.

The exact same thing happend to me before, I still don't know why, it could be of spyware or something like that, but if you have alot of PSD files on your computer, they might be a bit of cause too, although they shouldnt! i had 256MB until i upgraded to 766MB of RAM, but once i deleted some PSD files and stuff I never used, it cleared space and i was able to use photoshop again.
It used to ask me for scratch disks because I have to hard drives, I stil don't know how I ran out of space..
But ti's still confusing.., the only thing i can think of is if another program is up using ur RAM, or it's adware or spyware, internet explorer does that, so you might wanna get spybot or something to help with that. Or if you have a P2P program like Kazaa or Bearshare or somethin, then those are big issues, delete them right away, you may get music and stuff.. but in return they screw up your computer. _________________ Space Artist

Good point about the spyware and what not shadow. Try this Allstories: Run Adaware and delete whatever it comes up with. Be sure to delete the objects in quarentine too. Restart your comp and try starting photoshop again. If the problem persists, uninstall photoshop like I mentioned in my earlier post. Reinstall it and give it a whirl. Make sure that you don't have other garbage running in the background, like AOL, MSN messanger, any and all Kodak programs (as kodak photodesk is a severe RAM hog). If those programs start when your comp starts, go into your selective start up and disable them. You can access them later when you want to use them.
BTW--is your ram just one stick of 512 or two sticks of 256?
Also, have you recently installed any other programs on your system, like a day or 2 before you started getting this problem?

I had already tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and a lot of your suggestions, but I just tried uninstalling it in addition to deleting additional Photoshop files and reinstalling. It worked. Thanks a bunch, guys.
