All right, I'm back on my main computer. I checked out the video. Unfortunately, there was a corruption of some sort halfway through, but I think I saw all I needed to see. Your mistake is an easy one to make, and very easy to correct. You're just forgetting to deselect (ctrl-D) after you fill the core with white. Once you've filled an area with white, press ctrl-D to deselect it. This is CRUCIAL.
If you don't press ctrl-D, you're basically making the lightsaber dimmer and dimmer every time you blur it, and the glow won't expand the way it should. It's a very easy mistake to make, so don't feel bad. I wasn't very clear in my tutorial. Always deselect. Give it a try now and let me know how it goes. Good luck! _________________ Interested in showcasing your special effects or learning some new ones from the masters? Check out PSFX! |

Glad to hear it's working for you!
To get a brighter look, make sure you're setting the Edge Glow layer to the Color Dodge blending mode (not Screen). Play around with higher saturation levels on the Base Glow layer, and use Levels to brighten things up. Just experiment around until you find the technique that works best for you.
Yellow and purple lightsabers use the same technique. Just use different values in Hue and Saturation. This will take experimentation to get the colors right, but the technique is the same.
There are many ways to pull off contact flashes. There's a tutorial in this thread on my site. This isn't exactly the technique I'd use, but it certainly creates a good effect. Try it out.
How old am I? Well, I generally avoid giving out personal info on the internet. Let's just say I'm not quite an adult, but not young enough to be considered a child. _________________ Interested in showcasing your special effects or learning some new ones from the masters? Check out PSFX! |

Glad we're on the same page.
Levels is a very useful tool for adjusting a layer's brightness. You access it by going Image>Adjustments>Levels. The dialog box has a jagged graph called a histogram, which gives you information about the brightness levels of the layer. (That's a little difficult to understand--I'd recommend borrowing a Photoshop book from the library.) There are five sliders you can use to change the brightness.
The three input sliders are right underneath the histogram. The two output sliders are lower down. Try dragging them around to see what they do. You'll just have to experiment and make observations about what they do. I could explain, but it'll make more sense if you just try it. _________________ Interested in showcasing your special effects or learning some new ones from the masters? Check out PSFX! |
