Photoshop 5.0.
How can I make certain part of a picture go grayscale while keeping the color from the rest. I've tried using the paintul, making a selection, then image grayscale, but it grayscales everything, not the area selected.

Dude, we like totally already had a wicked thread about htis, it had like 6 methods in it.
My favourite way would be to add a hue/saturation adjustment layer, and mask it. You can most likely type in "layer mask" in photoshop help to find out how to use them.

Do you actually need greyscale or would ordanary black and white do? if it will just select the area you want and go to image ajustments desaturate
(in version 5 it may be slightly different? if you haven't got the desaturate option use the hue/saturation after selecting the area and just slide the saturation to zero)
Heres a pic I just did it on to show you the B+W rectangle was done using the desaturate after a selection. Hope that helps Wayne

Everytime I try to desaturate, it tells me the selected area is empty.
EDIT: Nevermind, I was in the wrong layer.
