I am using Photoshop 5.0 for Windows, and right now I want to change fonts into images so I can make some effects to them, but I can't quite remember how.

I'm not sure what you mean, did you want to add text to an image, or put a photo into a letter (see pic) Wayne

I mean, transforming a letter into an image so I can use the smudge tool on it.

Can't remember for 5. Later versions go Layer>Rasterize>Type. May be the same for you?

Nope, no rasterize in Photoshop 5.0

In the PS Help file, do a search for "rasterize type"

um..
or search for "Render Type", I think that is what they called it back then.
