Hmm. I can’t remember when Illy started supporting transparency in placed bitmap images. But try anyway:
Create your image with transparent areas in Photoshop and save as PSD file. In Illustrator go File>Place and browse to place your photoshop document.
Good luck.

I guess it's the transparent areas I'm having trouble with. That option isn't available for the background.

You might have to do some research. Plenty of tutorials out there. But it's easy.

Here are the basics:
Open your image in Photoshop.
Double click on the Background Layer to make it a layer that have transparent pixels.
Use eraser tool, or select areas and delete, to make parts transparent.
Save as PSD.
In Illy File>Place file.
(and again, this may not place with transparency in your older versions.)

Thanks Cbadland
I'll try that tonight.
I bought the PS Bible for that version and I really don't mind digging but I'm under time pressure.......the person who was supposed to design this for me crapped out at the last minute so I bought the programs and am doing it myself. I do appreciate it and will probably be back for more help. I don't know much about Illustrator either. Do you think it's worth me upgrading to the newest PS?

For this one project? No.
But Photoshop has certainly come a long way since 5.0.

I used to use "AI" but don't want to give Adobe engineers (as good as they are) that much credit.
