Funny thing is, i actually did spend Hours on it, only to find a dissapointing and fairly average result comapred to your technique which took 10 mins

yet another way;
convert to greyscale / go to curves / adjust the curve to remove the grey values / convert back to rgb / use the bucket to fill color. takes 1.3 minutes
