I know that this has been posted before. In fact, I have looked at the search engine and found the discussion on using the Alpha channel but for some reason it didn't work well for me. Can someone explain it in simplier terms on how to extract this horse so that I have all the flying hair?

It really depends on how good the resoultion is on the original if it would be hard or not. But you can use the extract tool to some degree (for the horses hair) or you can do what I did a little rushed but it came out ok.
Select the horse and rider via a quick mask...It takes time painting the horse/rider but on a good resolution photo it easier to follow the contour, I had to make up the boundries as I guessed my way around the horse becouse of the low res.
I used a little brush on the hair didn't help much because of the size of the picture but maybe you can see the work...if not use the extract too for the hair only.
Quick mask selection is the way I would do it...slow at first but you get the hang of it quickly and correct any error on the fly.

Lasa,
Thanks for your help. I do have a higher resolution, just posted this one. Actually, I need to take just the horse and rider and place just them on a different background. I am making a collage or composite of different images of this rider and her horse. I don't need the background of this or any other photo, just the image. What is the best way to do this? I have used extract as well as laso before, just wanted a better method to use for the flying hair.

I would separate the horse /rider using the mask tool...the squear with a circle in it just under the set background color.
Then with a hard black brush paint the horse and rider, when done everything you want selected should be a transparent red mask.
then hit Q. then delete the horse and rider should left on screen.
Then go to the original picture and use the extract tool on the hair / tail.
Copy the exract hair onto the separated horse /rider.
That how I would approach it...the extract tool works well but you need to work it.
