I am working on a photo for a newsletter which will be printed in black and red. I would like to preserve the reds in the photo and convert the rest to gray scale. Am I asking the impossible?
If not, can you suggest how to go about it?

Thanks for the welcome and for the tutorial. I really appreciate it. The Weichert tips definitely moved me a few steps farther along. However, when I take out the other color channels, a lot of the detail that I would like to see in the halftone is lost.
What I'm trying to do is have the photo in grayscale except for the areas of the building (all the trim) that are red. And it has to work for the printer that I'm taking it to. If it was a four-color job, there would be no problem, but I'm worried because it's spot color.
Any more suggestions? |

Can you post a link to the image?
Sorry I'm not of more help. Spot Channels and traps are not something I use.
Also, try asking your printer. He/she might have a quick solution. |

Well, I think I got it. I can't tell anybody how because I did so many steps and missteps!
Anyway, once I got it to two channels, black and pantone red, the key was to save it as a photoshop dsc2 file. The pre-press department at the printers told me this. The red doesn't show in my InDesign layout but they said that was normal.
