I photographed a piece of Sywroski Crystal, with a white background, soft box and another umbrella flash light. Solid White Background with proper WB adjustments on the camera. I am trying to get the background out of this image. The way the crystal is, I have light reflection all over the crystal (an effect that I want to keep) but do not want to see the background as this is going in a publication. Any ideas? I tried the standard path around the object, however it is way too intricate to get all of the jagged edges. Any ideas???

Thanks

Can you show us what you are looking at..A picture is worth a thousand words. If you don't want to because of publication issues can you show us something similar?

unlock the Background and right-click > blending options. Under blend if grey, drag the white slider over a bit. Hold ctrl to break it apart, which will help remove hard edges. the only problem with this is it'll also get rid of white inside the crystal, so make a new layer under it and paint some white there. If you want the background completely white, you can just as eaily add a solid colour layer under it.

Here is the image that I shot. If you think I should re shoot or there is something different to try let me know and I will try.

Thanks for you help...it is greatly appreciated.
If I can find a really good, dependable freelance photo editor, I would be interested in speaking with them about freelance position with a natinal magazine.

Thanks

Probably won't be hard to find one of those here, but it's kinda hard for me to find your picture.

I got bored after about 8 minutes, but here's where I got to. The thing is, the crystal just doesn't look nice against a white background

Well here's my shot at it...
I cut it out by masking it...lightened it with the adj. curve and screen mode.
I didn't like it floating in thin air so I put it back on its box but blacked out a little...made a little render light spot behind it.

Just an idea...the cutting out is very do-able.
The light greys pick up the back colors nicely.

Fun thanks for sharing.
