on one of my layers, i selected "group into new smart object". then, when i tried to apply a gradient to the layer, i got a message that basically said a smart object was not directly editable.
is there a way for me to undo the "group into new smart object"?
You can right-click on a Smart Object layer and go Rasterize Layer. This will apply any transformations and create a normal layer. However, Smart Objects are editable. Double-click on the object's thumbnail in the Layers palette, and a new document will pop up with only your Smart Object in it. Make whatever changes you want, then save your work and switch back to your real document. The changes should show up.
Layers can be grouped into a "folder" by shift- or ctrl-clicking the layers you want included, then pressing ctrl-G. A new group will appear containing these layers. If you want a temporary group, you can simply shift- or ctrl-click the layers you want.
