I have a photograph of an elephant that I would like to cut and paste "into" an ellipse and be able to add a colored background. Can I do this in PS or can I convert the file somehow and make it an ellipse in Illustrator?
I want to get rid of the current BG which is black (will use the eraser tool) and be able to add another color according to the client's needs.

If it was me, i would select the part of the picture you wanted to be in the circle, (using either then polygonal lasoo tool, or the crop tool) , once the part of the image you want is selected, go to edit > define pattern, and save under a suitable name, then in a new document, get the elliptical marquee tool, create your circle, then fill it with any colour, finally, go to blending options of that layer, by right-clicking the layer that the circle is on in the layers pallette (generally bottom left) and selecting blending option, then go down to pattern overlay and select your pattern from the dropdown list.
Then, once thats done, de select the circle, creaate a new layer (CTRL + SHIFT + N) and name it whatever and then use the paint bucket tool to fill your layer, making sure the layer thats been filled, is moved behind the circle, and your done,
There may be other ways to do this, but thats the way i would use personally, i hope this helps, and if it doesnt, send me the background colour you want and ill do it for you _________________ www.jerseyhacker.co.uk
I'm not sure what you really want. You want the black background gone, and then you want the pic put inside an ellipse?
I might be tempted to get rid of the background with the magic wand, but be careful. Often it'll screw up more than it helps. As for the ellipse, select ellipse from the marqeuu fly-out to draw one.
I'd like to help, but I'm not sure if I'm at all on the right track. You're probably knew what I just said.

The simple answer is yes, open your elephant and select all then copy. Next with your new background create the ellipse with the elliptical marquee and paste into, then use the move tool to move it around, and the magic want to select the black and fill with any colour you like. Wayne
this is more of a technique preference, because swanseamale47's answer was fine. I personally would prefer to make a new background layer, then use a layer mask for the ellipse on the elephant. This way, if you're completely done the image and and the client says "can you move the elephant down 3 pixels?", you'll be able to make that change very quickly and easily. Also, after you've deleted the black background in the elephant layer, I would create the new background colour on a new layer. Again, this will mean that if you want to change that colour last minute, it will be easy as pie.
