Well, I'm still stuck with PS 6, but I think I can answer both questions.
1. I've heard that CS has a single link button near the bottom of the palette, rather than a box for each layer. Use that instead. I think you can select multiple layers in CS.
2. This problem can happen in most versions. When you've got the Line tool selected, there should be three buttons below the file menus. Try selecting a different one. _________________ Interested in showcasing your special effects or learning some new ones from the masters? Check out PSFX! |

I meant click one of the three buttons. When you have the Line tool selected, there are three buttons at the top left corner of the screen. One of these shows a blank gray rectangle; if you leave the mouse over it, it should say "Create Filled Region." I think that's what you're looking for.
As to the linking: well, my only suggestion would be to select multiple layers. I believe you have to control-click. Like I said, I don't have CS, so I'm not sure about this. _________________ Interested in showcasing your special effects or learning some new ones from the masters? Check out PSFX! |

CS1 has the Link/Paint layer or layer mask icon next to eye. In CS2 the Link icon is at the bottom of Layers Palette.
Vector masks are part-and-parcel of Shapes. Why do you want to get rid of them? If you must: go Layer>Rasterize>Shape. |

I'm inclined to agree with cbadland. Clipping paths are quite useful when you're dealing with anti-aliased hard edges. _________________ Interested in showcasing your special effects or learning some new ones from the masters? Check out PSFX! |
