One way:
Make your drop shadow to right or left.
Right click (control click Mac) on the drop shadow effect in the layers palette and choose Create Layer. (or go Layer>Layer Style>Create Layer) This will convert your drop shadow effect into a separate layer. Now duplicate that layer and Transform to flip horizontal.

Since the shadows will now be on their own layers, you can distort, blur, fade… whatever to make them look more realistic. I’m sure there are good tutorials on the web for making realistic shadows… if that is what you are after.

Add a drop shadow to the image that needs it,
duplicate this layer, this time set the fill to 0 (if you have an older PS version, it might be under adv. blending modes in the layer style), turn global lighting off and set the 2nd drop shadow. You're now able to adjust either drop shadow at any time.
