make multiple selections and then delete the selected areas
No, one should never do that. If you have selections active then one should click on the mask button. This way you can save your selection, adjust it even apply filters or any other techniques to this same mask.
At a later stage you can still decide to merge the layer with the mask, but not at such an early stage, it's not the way pros work and if I read this I feel sweaty all over and my temperature goes all the way up.

No dude, a vector mask is a lot more suited for this image. Again, I start sweating all over when I read how you select the backgorund.

hmmm sorry i got you all sweaty and freaking out, I dont know for a small job like that, that seems like the easiest way to do it and it gets it done, if its done so poorly why dont you tell us how to use the vector masks to achve the same effect in a short tutorial please:)
