Hello,

I have been asked to design a sign for a cafe. Up until now I have only worked on business cards, letterheads, flyers etc so my computer has been more than adequate. (P4 3.2Ghz HT, 120GB HDD - partioned into 3, 1Gig dual channel DDR Ram, 4mb on-board video, Windows XP Pro SP2, Photoshop CS). I have the windows paging file on C: and have the other two as scratch disks. I also use the other two for program installations (all my programs are installed on D: ) and I use the third as storage.

I did the low resolution version for a presentation that went down well and the design was approved. Unfortunatley I have now run into a crippling problem. The file needs to be to scale (900cm by 37cm) at 300dpi. The resulting file is huge (2Gig+ in .psb and its still not finished). My computer just can't handle this and I can't work with the file properly. Saving alone takes nearly half and hour. Any suggestions?

I would also like to update my computer to be better suited for such large projects in the future and have received the following suggestions: 2Gig RAM minimum, Raid HDD setup and a good video card. Does anyone here have any suggestions on this or anything else they wish to add. Would really like to hear from people who routinely work on such large files. Any suggestions on video cards would be greatly appreciated (I do some gaming from time to time also). My IT company has a Gigabyte ATI 9550d 256Mb video card on special for $195 AUD. I am not sure what I need to take into consideration when purchasing a video card in relation to photoshop so any advice would be greatly appeciated. Does a video card make a difference to the handling of large files - for example, does a video card boost the performance of applying a filter to a high resolution graphic?

Also, it was suggested that I might be able to use interpolation (if the company doing the printing has software capable) to make a smaller image bigger. how would I go about this? How can I set up the file to be best suited for interpolation?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions,
MdB76 :-)

Who says? It is VERY unusual for a print that big to require a resolution that high. I would double check those requirements and make sure the person telling you that knows what they are talking about.
If the target audience is going to be viewing this from a few inches away, then maybe 300 ppi might be reasonable. But the reality is, for art that big, most viewers will be meters away, and the resolution can be scaled back.

To up-res, use the Bicubic Smoother interpolation option.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. The sign will be on the awening of a cafe so will be seen reasonably close (as close as 1 metre). I know extremely large billboards are only done at 75dpi but was told that 300 dpi for what I was doing would be recommended. The sign will be digitally printed onto metal.

The person who told me this was the graphic designer at a sign company I spoke to. They seem experienced and seemed to know what they were talking about. I would also imagine that most people who get signs done get the sign company to do the artwork on their own computers which I can currently only dream of (He was the one who suggested the 2 Gb RAM, RAID array HDD video etc. which is what he uses). I am going to chat with the sign company who is going to create the sign on Monday and see what they say.

Thank you again for your reply.

I know this post is old now but thought I would post an update incase someone else finds this at a later date who has the same problem.

You were right. I only need 100dpi to scale. The sign is long finished and up and running. They owners loved it.

Thank you for taking the time to post.

Kind regards,
