Hello.
How does this cartoonist get the shading effect in this cartoon?
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/series/cartoon/images/18wededcar.gif
Can this be done using Photoshop or something else?
If it is done in photoshop how?
I've tried a few ways but I can't get it the same. I was thinking adding texture to a brush but if you hit the same spot twice it gets dark and you loose the lines.
Also tried creating a layer with dots, setting to 50%, then erasing around the images. Doesn't work the same. I think this cartoonist is adding the shading with a brush or something.
Thanks.

Try this
Hit the white areas with the magic wand tool setting about 32. Then Select - Similar Delete all of the white area. This should leave you with the black outline drawing

Make a new layer below drawing. Use this to paint your shadows on

Just a further thought really, but.....

If you wanted to create a variety of shading effects you could experiment with the use of halftones, creating a sort of newspaper effect if you like.
