I received a new computer as an early grad (from H.S.) present over a month ago. It's nothing special, but it should suffice.
So, since I don't want to load this new computer up with crap (spyware via Kazaa or Limewire) I plan on buying a version of Photoshop.
There is the Adobe Photoshop Full CS2 Creative Suite Standard available here for $279 ($285 with shipping) on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=51344&item=7157014700&rd=1
There is the Adobe Creative Suite Premium CS2, Version 2 Academic (Windows)
available here for $395 ($405 with shipping) on eBay.

Look at the 2nd link though. It says this: After clicking BUY THIS NOW, you need to provide your proof of academic eligibility. Would I qualify since I'm going to Wayne State University ( www.wayne.edu )?
Is that version available in the 2nd link the same thing as this http://store.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/overview.html ?
What exactly IS the academic version?

Make CERTAIN you purchase through an authorized Adobe Education Reseller. You can check here to get pricing and help find an official reseller: http://www.adobe.com/education/purchasing/main.html
DON’T trust the ebay listing company unless you verify it through Adobe.
There is no difference between the academic version and full version of any of the Adobe CS products. HOWEVER if you get the Creative Suite-2 instead of just Photoshop CS-2, you’ll have to upgrade the whole suite when new versions come out, you can’t just upgrade the individual programs, such as Photoshop. (Which, btw, I think is really crappy policy on Adobe's part.)
So the educational price on the Creative Suite is a sweet deal, but future upgrading can be more expensive than just getting PSCS (which is also a good deal). |

I am not all that concerned with upgrading at the moment. It is definitely worth factoring into my decision though, considering this is a pretty big investment for myself at least.
Can you give me some more details on the differences between just the standard suite and the premium suite? Are the programs that come with the premium suite great? I already have a version of Adobe Acrobat. I believe that is one of the programs that comes with the premium suite.

Don't confuse Acrobat Reader (a free pdf reader that almost everyone has) with Adobe Acrobat, which is used to create and edit pdf files. |

Adobe doesn't offer an educational version of CS-2 Standard. The CS-2 Premium is $399 through ANY authorized academic software outlet to a qualified buyer. (www.AcademicSuperstore.com has CS-2 for $380!)
Here’s what I would do: Buy Photoshop CS-2 now. Stay in school and in a year or two from now buy Adobe CS-3, which will (hopefully) also include Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash. That would be a fabulous deal for under four hundred dollars! |

Man, you sure are a helpful guy. How do you know that CS-3 is going to be coming out? Side note: Did Photoshop CS 1 come out after Photoshop 7.0 (<--that's the version I have right now)? Anyways..I guess that's really not all that important.

So, would the cost of an upgrade if I purchased the Premium Suite to the next suite be very expensive? How expensive do you think?
One thing that is hard to pass up is getting ALL of the programs (a $1,200 value) for just $405. Vs. JUST Photoshop CS2 Academic version for $289.
I'd be saving myself $116, but if I got the premium suite, I'd be getting myself a LOT more programs. Kind of beating that over..but why exactly would you recommend getting JUST CS2.
Also, have you used any of the new programs such as Photoshop® CS2, Illustrator® CS2, InDesign® CS2, GoLive® CS2, and Acrobat® 7.0 Professional software with new Version Cue® CS2, or Adobe Bridge? |

I have no idea if or when Adobe CS-3 will be produced or what it will contain. (I should have put a little winky emoticon next to that).
All the other information you are asking you can get with a simple Google search. (and, btw, if your copy of PS 7 is legit, you can get the PSCS-2 upgrade for just $149, even if your PS 7 is an educational version.)
In the suite I use Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat. It is a professional software collection. Use what suits you; your needs may differ from mine. Make a decisions while you can still get an educational discount, either PS or the whole suite is good. Time to “poop or get off the pot” as they say. |

it really depends what you will be wanting the programs for...photoshop is awesome, and the other programs are great too...but if you're not going to use them then it's probably a waste of money. i'd go the photoshop CS2 academic version if i were you and if you think you're going to definitely use and need the other programs consider an upgrade down the track as suggested maybe CS3?!
