I was wondering if there was a way I could use a brush to invert the colors of whatever I'm painting over in just the area of where I'm painting...
Like the example.

It's easier to use shape tools and use the "exclude overlapping areas" option. It can be done with brushes though. Let me know if you still need help with the brush method.

I could still use that brush method. I was planning on using a brush set that I downloaded.

Well I'll use the triangle and circle example to get the point across.
You would copy the triangle layer, lock transparent pixels on it, Ctrl+Click the circle layer and then paint on the duplicated triangle.
