|
|
I have two issues here, but they're both related. I'm trying to open an 8 bit bitmap in PS. When it opens up, the image is locked, and seems to be completely un-lockable.
This brings me to my second issue. I tried copying the image and opening up a new canvas of the same dimensions. Once I'm finished editing the image, I try to save as a bitmap. The problem here is that PS won't let me make the bitmap any smaller than 16 bit. I can't even select 8 bit, etc.
Suggestions? Thanks! |

Thanks for the reply, but I tried that and it doesn't work. I tried double-clicking as well. |

When you say bitmap, do you use it as a generic term for any raster file? Or are you referring specifically to a .bmp file or the PS Bitmap mode (which is by its nature 1 bit).
(the bit-depth choices for a .bmp file refer to the total bit depth, NOT the per-channel depth.) |

Well, when I attempt to save it as a .bmp, I'm able to select the quality. Under the Depth selections, you have 1 bit, 4 bit, 8 bit, 16 bit, 24 bit and 32 bit. I can only select 16 though 32. This is driving me nuts. Not to mention the fact that any picture I open with PS that is lower than 16 bit is locked, and I can't edit it or unlock it. |

Why would you want to save any color file at less than 24 bit depth?
Any way, it looks like you can save a Grayscale file at 8 and 4 bit .bmp, and in Photoshop’s Bitmap mode, you can save as 1 bit .bmp file.
When you say you can't edit… You are unable to do ANYTHING? you can’t grab the brush tool and paint a color on it? All you can do is view the file?
(edit: If you have an Indexed Color .gif file you CAN save that in 8-bit depth as a .bmp file. An Index Color file you can edit, you just can't unlock the background layer. Change the Mode to RGB if you want to make layers, etc.) |
