I know there is a simple answer behind my question, but I can't find it anywhere. When erasing, instead of just white I get a b/w checkered pattern.

well the checkered pattern is where your layer isn't filled and so it is transparent, if this is an issue for you then i don't know if you will know about layers yet, but if you do! try this: open a new doc, change background to lets say red Blush then create a new layer above that and fill it with any color that you want other then red, then in this layer start erasing, and you will hopefully discover the magic behind layers and eraser!

why not make a new layer and put it under the layer with the image on it and fill it with white or any other color
