The idea for this one came to me one day when I was particularly depressed. Can you tell?

It was done in Illustrator, using just a bunch of ellipses, some transparency and the default brushes that come with it, plus the pen tool for the eyes and a couple of gradients.

Yes, I know technically there should be no highlight on a black hole. Nor do black holes have eyes, purple or any other colour. I took a few artistic liberties. :-)

The problem I see is that there's no apparent depth, the overall concept and intial attempt are good, but if you were to find a way to add some depth it would look much better.

I see your point. I thought that just making the swirls relatively brighter and brighter as they approached the black hole would be enough (since that's what happens in the real universe), but now that I look at it, you're right. It does look a little flat. I'm not sure what I can do about it... I'll put some thought into it.
