I cannot copy in illustrator and paste over into photoshop like I normally can. Any reason why this would happen, and how can I fix it? Right now I can't choose paste from the edit menu because it is greyed out, and CTRL V won't work either. They will work if I copy an image online and paste it in.

Or if you are using layers are you on the wrong one?

No, it has nothing to do with layers. I am having the same problem. My temporary solution is to save and close the .ai file, then open the file in Photo shop. But this is why I'm on this site. I can cut & paste into PS from about any other program, but not Illustrator. I need to fix this problem. Can anyone help?

Make sure you are pasting to a vector layer not a raster one.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. If you mean that I should try to paste the Illustrator object into a Paths layer, I just tried it and that doesn't work either. But good suggestion -- one that I had not thought of yet. // As I look at JoeSombebody's original post, I think one thing we have in common is that this began at about the same time, which leads me to beleive there may have been an automated update by Adobe which gliched this feature. Is that possible?

Photoshop has 'two rendering' layers: Raster and vector.

Raster layers contain photographic type images and vector layers contain text and line drawings. Since the Illustrator file is vector format type it can only be copied to a vector layer not a raster one. Check your Layers Palette to make sure the layer you're trying to paste into is a vector one.

Make sure AICB is checked in Illustrator’s Preferences>File Handling.

Paste option is grayed-out? It sounds like the copy is not even making it to your clipboard. Can you copy a shape in AI and paste it into a new AI document?
Along the same lines… and this is a total guess... try purging your PS clipboard before copying art from AI.

When pasting into PS you should get the options to paste as Pixels, Path or Shape Layer.
