I found the best size settings for these type of clouds to be 6"x4" at 150 dpi.

1. Set foreground color to black, background color to white.
2. Background layer: filter/render/clouds.
3. Create a new layer: filter/render/difference clouds.
4. Set this new layer to color burn.
5. Create a new adjustment layer with a gradient of blue to white.
6. Beneath this layer create another layer and fill with a gradient blend of blue to white.
7. Set this layer to screen blending mode at about 70% opacity.

That’s about it.

Play around with the settings until you come up with something that you like or better still use a stock image of clouds.

This is certainly better than just applying the Clouds filter with blue and white, and this method would work for some applications. Still, I think the only way to get truly photorealistic clouds is to actually paint them by hand (digitally or with real paint). And I stink at that, so I can't help you there. Birthday Big Grin

Well, I don't really stink at it anymore. Just buy a graphics tablet and give it lots of practice.

There's some pretty neat cloud brush sets out there as well. This technique is pretty sweet though.

Digital painting is the way to go, I'm telling you. It's so much fun and so much more versatile than just layering filters. Brow
