Afternoon All, really glad i have found this site maybe just maybe i may find the answer to my question.

anyhow, while using CS i may want to create a compound path, so in this instance a letter 0 so i would use the pen tool and create a path around the outside of the Letter 0 then use the pen tool to create the inner section (this would be on the same path as the outter path) now usually in version 7 and below when i go to create outlines a selection would be shown exactly where i had used to the pen tool, but for some reason in CS only the outter path is selected leaving the inner section untouched.

does anyone have any ideas why this is happening? its driving me insane!! if nobody understands what the hell im talking about let me know and ill post up pics.

many thanks

Hugh

It sounds like you want to have "Exclude Overlapping Path Area" (last icon on the right) selected in the Pen Tool option bar.

OK, so you've drawn the outer ring of the "O" with the Pen Tool. Before you draw the inner ring you must convert that Path to a Selection - quickest way: right click and choose Make Selection. In this Dialogue box there are two stages:
1. Rendering i.e. Feather to taste.
2. Operation - Only option is of course "New Selection".
Now, you draw the second inner ring and once again right-click, once again you get:
1. Rendering i.e. Feather to taste.
BUT
2. Operation (this is what's happening to you as you've not got the correct option chosen) - Choose "Subtract from Selection"; third one down.
Naturally if only "New Selection" were available again or chosen by mistake it would become the dominant command and would cancel the previous one - in this case the outer ring.

Quite a circuitous route.
Hugh, just select the “exclude overlapping path areas” icon first in the Pen Tool option bar and it will work just as it did in PS 7.

.... but, Hugh said, and I quote; "does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?"
I chose to expand on the "why" bit as I consider it an important part of understanding not only this niggle but how the program ticks in general, sorry to have just sounded long-winded!

All the Best,
m.
