Sometimes a small and discreet button is the best choice, sometimes a bigger one .. it really depends on many things, the specific layout colours, theme and so on.
I'd rather use small buttons or none (I go with text links), but it's a personal choice.

I go with text. As well as being easy and less grahpic heavy it's definately an SEO boost.
