I've racked my brains trying to adjust the marked cream coloured areas of this image to the white fur colour of the dog. But to no avail
has anyone any ideas

Good challenge. I made a new layer, set to color blend. Painted in areas with the sampled white color of the center fur. (nice witam)

Thanks Witam looks pretty good
I could get almost that far... I suppose its going to have to do. Did you use layer mask H/S+curves ?
ps
those are tan markings on his face that need to be white 'grease paint' like Gene Simmons make-up

No i didn't use any of those since you told me you tried and it didn't work.. i did it the old fashioned way.. I picked a color of the right color (see image, that is the color i picked), painted over the bad white parts in a seperate layer and put that layer to hue (also put opacity to about 70%). It took a few seconds to do.. if you put a little more work in it, i'm sure you'll get it exactly as you want it to be :-)

Well thought out.
I suppose I got bogged down with too many technicalities
