Not sure if canvas is the right name but if you go File>New (that's what I'm doing). I size the canvas to what I want but then when I go right back to it and look at the image size the dimensions are different, although just slightly. Can anyone explain why? I am trying to make a layout that needs to be an exact size. |

Are you viewing it at 66% or 100% ? _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade! |

Please be specific: What size are you entering? What unit of measure? What Resolution?
When you "look at the image size" afterward, do you mean opening the Image Size dialog or looking at the image on your monitor?
If you are looking in the Image Size dialog, how, exactly do the numbers differ from your original input? |

cbadland,
o.k., specific. file>new, insert values 3.2 inches wide and 2.27 inches height, resolution 72. I now have my canvas.
Then - image>image size, document size values show as, 3.194 W x 2.264 H (inches). As I said, the difference is minimal but I'm just wondering why? The layout size is for a magazine with other similar sized layouts and must be precise.
Thanks for your help. It's probably something really stupid |

Ah. That’s what I thought. Each pixel you have is 1/72 of an inch square. So, unless your dimensions are multiples of 1/72”, the image size will change slightly. So a 1 X 1 inch would not change, but a 1.1” X 1.1” canvas will become 1.097” X 1.097” canvas at 72 ppi. |

thanks cbadland, alas, math isn't a strong suit of mine either should I change the resolution size to fix the problem? What should the resolution be set at for something that will ultimately be printed? |

Higher res will help both in getting your measurements right and better print quality. If you are sending this to a printing service, ask them what resolution they want for the image. If going to an inkjet or laser printer… somewhere in the 300 ppi range should do.

thanks Charles. When I changed the resolution to 300 the values stayed the same. I appreciate your help. |
