I have a black and white image that I'd like to turn the white portion of it transparent. That way, I can put any color layer underneath it where that color can be in place of the white. It's very difficult with all the detailed shading.

Without seeing the example, because it doesn't seem to load, i would say use the color range. Choose white as color to select on and use some fuzziness to get all the white.
Now hit ok and delete the selection. It should give you what you need.

Another way that may be a little more editable is to place a layer of color(s) you want underneath your picture Then, in the Blending Options of Layer Styles dialog of your bw layer, adjust the right slider of the “Blend if” to make white transparent. (Hold the opt/alt key to split the slider for a smooth transition). The benefit of this method is that it is editable and can be readjusted later on.
