Please help

I have taken some pictures in RAW format. When transfered to my lap-top they are saved as NEF files. How do I open them in Photoshop? The furthest I have got is doing 'file', 'open as', open as 'RAW'. But then I get stuck. The furthest I get then is a snow storm like picture with no image. Opening as any other format doesn't even get that far. What should I be doing?

Thanks
Chris

You didn't mention the Photoshop version you are using. Check that your version of Adobe Camera Raw supports your camera.
It make need updating, or if it's an older version it may not support your camera.

Hi hawkeye

I take it then that some form of software is needed to handle the RAW image before it can be used in Photoshop.

Part of Photoshop is Adobe Camera Raw. It handles raw files, but each version is limited as to which cameras are supported.
If you have CS2, for instance, it will not support the newer cameras which came out recently.
Check to see if your camera is supported in the version of PS you are using. You may need to download an update.

If not, the camera mfr. should have provided software to handle these files, which will allow you to convert them for PS use.
