Hi Everyone,

I'm new to photoshop and have been recently messing around with different font styles etc etc

I was following a tutorial online about making text "bling". as part of the tutorial i had to download a small GIF file which would act as the diamond inside the text. This GIF file would fill the text and thus make it look blingging.

However it seems as though photoshop CS3 uses a pattern file other than a GIF file for its patterns (I believe CS2 used GIFs aswell)... my question is... Is it possible for CS3 to use GIFs as patterns? And if not can anyone recommend me a download so I can have more patterns (preferably one which has diamonds)

Thanks for the help Big Grin

Ok Are you ready,

First open your picture that you want as a pattern in Photoshop. If it is a GIF I would save it as a Jpeg first. I use flexi to export all my Gifs to jpegs. Flexi allows the colors to snap much better than Photoshop. After getting it into a good Jpeg file, Reopen the JPG in photoshop. Click on Image then Image Size. A new window will appear. Make sure the Size of your file is 16 inches by 16 inches. Tutorials tell you to reduce the DPI to 80 I never go below 100. There is a scroll box at the bottom of the window that says Resample Image: In the scroll box choose option Bicubic Smoother. Then click Ok to exit the Image Size Window. A transformation may appear on your picture.
Then click on your Edit menu and choose Define Pattern. Rename your pattern to whatever you want. And click ok. Then choose the paint bucket tool, in the top left change specification from FOREGROUND to PATTERN Scroll down and make sure your new fill is in your pattern selections.
It seems a lot harder than it really is. I have found that Photoshop sometimes does not save as a TRUE JPG foprmat. So If you do not have Flexi to import and export your Gifs to jpegs use a simple Photo program like Photoimpression, maybe the basic windows imaging program will work to. I can not say it will not work with a tiff or Gif, because I have never tried, I always just use jpegs for the patterns.

Once you have it in your pattern palette you can then use your new fill in any project you are working on as long as you do not remove it from your current list, by changing the list. I always ammend my brushes and gradients and patterns so it just keeps adding them to the bottom of your palette area. It does take longer for photoshop to load but all your tools are at hand and you never have to search thru looking for the file that has the brush or gradient or pattern you need while working on projects.

I hope this helped you. Please contact me if you need more information.
