Just looking for some 'do's & don'ts' as far as when to use the 'Noise Ninja' noise removal plug-in in one's workflow. The plug-in tutorial writes that noise removal should be used as early as possible in the workflow...especially before any color correcting, cropping, etc. So if this is true, why not write just to use it as your very 1st step before adjusting any/all photos?? I guess my question is: if noise removal is needed, when should you use it? Is there any downside to having this as my first step in the workflow before taking the photo into CS3 RAW for 1st adjustments?
Thanks.. |

I am a big fan of NN and use it in about 80% of my workflow.
I would suggest installing the PS plugin version and definately using it before any color correction adjustments. One technique I use occasionally (if you don't mind large working files) is doing my image manipulation in layered PSD files.
The first layer is my original base, or backup file. Above that would be a copy with noise reduction. Then I will duplicate that layer and do any retouching/manipulation necessary. Masked adjustment layers would be on top of that (I am a big fan of "non-destructive" editing).
If it's noise other than color noise you are reducing, you can also duplicate your background image (Ctrl+j) and run NN on that layer, setting the layer's mode to Luminosity. If it's color noise you're reducing, set the mode to Color.
Hope that helps! _________________ LB |
