On a later date I will be taking some nice photo's of my car, and the motor! I want to place the motor on the background of the car picture! I have read like 3 tutorials about layer masks, and I just can't seem to get it! I add a layer mask, copy the motor picture, and paste it into the layer mask and sometimes it makes it a new layer, and sometimes it puts it as the layer mask, but either way the motor picture is red!!!

Can someone tell me the real way to do this? It allways makes it a new layer and not the layer mask, but very rarely it makes it as the layer mask as I want it to be!

Here is the pics!

Copy the engine and paste it into the mustang picture before making the mask. Then select the bit of the engine you want to KEEP. In your case, this can be done with the circular marquee tool fairly easily. Once you have the bit selected you want to keep, click on the mask button at the bottom of the layers pallette near the new layer button. Doing this should apply your mask correctly to the engine. Let me know if it's still turning pink.

It didn't turn red! I wanted to put the mask on the car, and the mask being the motor! Really with a black background I don't need a mask! I could just put the picture on the black! But say I wanted a background "you know some trees or somthing"! I guess I am not understanding the proper procedure for the apply mask, and bringing the motor to the mask the correct way!

Being my car is the background I have to double click and and make it a layer! Now I have Layer 1: the car, and layer 2: the motor! I want to mask layer 1, and have the motor be the mask! How am I able to get the motor picture to be the mask of layer 1 with no red??

Thanks, Mark

You are confused on what a mask is. A mask blocks/hides part of a layer/layer set. The mask is linked to only that layer/set. For example if you make a layer that is completely black and add a blank mask to it, try coloring on the mask with a black brush. The black will disapeer wherever you paint revealing the layer underneath. If you make the motor into a mask, there will be a hole in the car. You follow?

I guess I don't understand what you actually want to do. Where do you want the engine?

I follow! I sat down and thought about it! I made the motor using a layer mask with that blur tool! I though i had to do the same to the car picture! I wasn't thinking of just adding that picture to the car picture like i would do :)! Like you said black background....

Now that I made the motor picture I can't seem to remember how I did it!

I am trying to start from scratch! I have the motor picture, and I have a radial blur picture as well! I add a layer mask to the motor, and I try to put the radial blur in the layer mask, but it adds a layer! I read about the channel! Put the eye next to the channel of the layer so when you add it to the layer it adds to the layer, and doesn't add another layer!

That works, but when I do that it turns red!!!

I forget how I did it to make it work!

Thanks, Mark

Hey thanks alot for your help and patience! I read the help on layer masks :) It says to hit Alt + click on the layer mask and it will show it! Than just hit paste and it puts it right there!

Thanks, Mark
