Hi-
I am having a very hard time finding a picture I like for use on a website without paying an arm and a leg. But even the best ones don't satisfy my needs as far as what I had in mind originally.
Is it possible to buy 3 or 4 photos from Istock, Shutterstock, etc and using Photoshop to make a composite photo taking parts of each photo without looking contrived? This would be for an autumn landscape scene.
Have no experience whatsoever with Photoshop or graphic design so I don't know it's capabilities.

hi goldfinger...
I know what you mean by trying to find the right picture.. and many times i end up modifying a image to fit my needs..
a couple of things first......
1. first do you have photoshop already...?
2. if modifying a image.. always double check on the lic ... in most cases there no problems but when in doubt --check... i have seen many people get from istock either free or bought.. and they had no problems...
noow...
3. is it possible to combine---- OH YES-- smiling...done all the time... now as far as not looking contrive...
sort of a broad word... makes difficult to reply..
maybe "look realistic" be a better words...
since i don't know elements you are trying to combine from various images... but in general you can combine elements and make it look natrual and part of the image...
for example if you want to a tree out of one image and put it into a another image... yes that can be doneand it can look realistic and not "photoshopped" ... or you can take a lake out of one and put into another image etc....
things like that there a ton of tutorials avail and of course help boards like us canhelp you..
but keep in mind how seemless the final project is, depends on the quallity of the elements/objects you add, and how well you blend them in... |

I would say go ahead and take any design element from a photo, skyline etc and as long as you change the overall image beyond recognition you should be alright.
As for your lack of an image editor, that could be slightly trickier _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade! |

Hi Tom
The problem with your question is that if it involves several pictures then it would be quite a big job and unfortunately this costs, but possibly worth it if you want a one off image! _________________ Lee |

I agree with jerryb4417. You just need to be sure about the licenses of the images you are planning to use. And as for photoshop you could get the trial version and go through a few basics if youre not familiar with it and you'd be at it in no time. Its just a matter of dedicating some time to learn the software. But if you dont want to do that you can always offer a freelance request or get someone who knows it to do the job. |

hi,
as far as softwar... if ps shop is not in your budget (cs5 is 700 bucks unless you can get a student discount huge saving theres...)
note: if you go for the cs5 maybe wait for cs6 .... or get from adobe a free upgrade if you get cs5) when cs6 is released..
there a couple of alternatives..
1. photoshop element is fairly good and lot cheaper..... although it doesn't have all the real nifty stuff..... and there others editors in category level
2. gimp-- it the best freeware program... and better than most image editors including in my opinion ps elements, .... does most of the things that photoshop does ... a lot of tutorials for gimp and many of the tutorials for ps can be used |

Combining pictures is one of the most fun things you can do in Photoshop! The more you learn the more you can do.
To take your example, you could use a real picture of a minaret to make a mask, then use that to impose your minaret shape on other artwork. Your artwork could be something you've made on the computer, or something you've painted yourself and scanned.
Note that there are free stock sites available (e.g stock exchange at www.sxc.hu ) or look up 'Creative Commons'. |
