I have an unusual problem with Photoshop 7. Whenever I doubleclick a jpg file to have it open in Photoshop, will start, but the file wont display. If I open a PSD then it will display. When Photoshop is open, I can click and drag a jpg into the program and it displays fine. Anyone have this happen to them? I reinstalled the program and the same thing happens. I'm using Win XP Home edition. Thanks! |

Could be a small number of things. Try right clicking on the .jpg file, then click open with, then click photoshop. If photoshop isn't there, then click choose from list and select adobe photoshop. If photoshop isn't in the list, then click choose program and find the shortcut for adobe photoshop then click ok. If photoshop isn't in the list, then click browse, then find the shortcut for photoshop, then click ok. It's quicker and easier than it seems.

Dude, he said it DID start photoshop, but the pic won't display, so that's not the problem. And even if it were, it'd be better to do it by clicking on "folder options" from my computer, going to "file types" and setting a default so it'll use PS automatically instead of having to choose it every time.

Actually I’ve read where Steve’s suggestion could solve the problem. (It has something to do with Windows creating a bad registry key.)
The two solutions I’ve seen were editing the registry or doing what Steve said, plus making sure “Always use this Program” is ticked.
(also, try deleting any spaces in the file's name.) |

Can you open the same jpeg from photoshop by clicking file open and browsing to it? I'm wondering if the pic is curpted or something. Wayne |

Well, worst case scenario, and I've only ever seen this happen on a server running multiple 500 gb hdd's (happened a few times actually!) is where a part of the drive is corrupt, so photoshop wouldn't read ANYTHING from that part (sector) of the drive. Ended up losing almost an entire photoshoot--something like 70 something picutres out of 90 something. Again, that was on a server, but theoreticaly the drive is the same. Ended up replacing the entire drive and it's raid partner drive. I seriously doubt that this is what's going on with your computer.......but you never know

I actually have the same problem while opening any jpeg. I've tried copying the file to a different computer with photoshop, and it opens up just the way it should. I'll try Steve's idea today while at work and see if that works. |

Well, I tried it and it still didn't work. I tried right clicking the file and Photoshop was in the list. I did discover something that makes it more wierd. I told the file to open in Imageready- and it opened fine. Now I'm really stumped. |

When you right click on the .jpg thumbnail, did you click "always do this action" (or something similar to that)? I almost want to say it's a Windows thing.
Have you tried resetting your preferences in photoshop? When you uninstalled it, did you do a search for "*photohsop" and "*Adobe" (without the quotations), and delete everything that was found before you reinstalled it?
Give those things a go around and then please let us know how you made out. Hope it help

Another forum mentioned trashing preferences. Shift+Alt+Control as you launch Photoshop. |
