I'm pretty good at drawing animals, either by hand or in Illustrator, but people are tough, so I've been practicing them a bit. I've tried sketching people I see on the subway, but this is my first attempt on the computer (not counting the very cartoony people I do for my web comic). I hope to be able, eventually, to draw realistic-looking people out of my imagination, but for now I'm working from photos I've taken.
This guy is a friend of my parents. I think I did a pretty good job for a first attempt, but I'd like some feedback. What do you guys think?

Looks like you need a little more shadow on the side of his forhead.

i agrea with theyapps on the shadow!
but it looks very good! all the main features of his face are included!
did you drew that just from looking at his picture, or did you put his picture on the background and traced his outlines? if not then i think you have alot of talent

Thanks for the comments and encouragement, guys. I've taken some of your suggestions and made some improvements of my own.
As for how I did it; it's done in Illustrator, using mostly solid areas of colour with radial gradients for the highlights, no gradient meshes. For strokes, I only used two brushes; one of the default elliptical ones and the "dry ink" brush for the hair/beard/eyebrows.
Yes, I did trace a bit. My usual method of working from a photo or scanned drawing is to insert two copies of the image into Illustrator, one next to the other. One I keep at 100% opacity, the other I take down to 30%. I then lock them both and create a new layer underneath to work on, drawing underneath the transparent image. I trace from that when I need to and turn its visibility off the rest of the time, so I can see my drawing more clearly and compare it to the opaque copy of the original. It's the most efficient way of working in Illustrator that I've found.

The background is crap, though... the photo was just a snapshot taken at a party, so it's neither sharp enough nor blurry enough, and there's no composition to speak of. If I was going to draw a background, I'd draw it from my imagination, or from another photo.
