Hi, I'm a new member who's used Photoshop for a while. It's only recently though that I've had to figure out how to do really precise work.

I opened up a new layer to create a mask to protect part of an image. The thing is I now have parts of the mask which have bled into the space I wish to adjust. I've tried using Quick Mask to paint over the area I want to subtract from the original mask, but even at a 1 pixel wide tool size it keeps trying to add more to the selection than what I've actually selected - areas which are of similar contrast and luminosity near to where I want to stop the mask. I've been doing this in Channels mode, BTW, using a copy of the Red Channel which has been adjusted to provide the highest level of black/white differentiation. How do I modify the edges of a mask to literally only those pixels I want to add/delete? I don't want Photoshop to "help" me by guessing at how much I'm really trying to select. Using CS3 on a Windows 7 platform.

Quick mask shouldn't "guess" at anything. Just use a brush as you describe. Make sure it's a small soft-edged brush, and if necessary lower the opacity of the brush.

Okay, I'll try it again. When I got to an edge which has luminosity levels very near to each other on either side, the Quick Mask went beyond my selection and selected adjacent pixels beyond what I'd picked.

Quick Mask isn't an automatic tool. Perhaps you mean the Quick Selection tool?

No, I'm sure I used Quick Mask. Perhaps I did not use it correctly.

(a bit later)... confirmed. I was making a mistake in the setup. I thought I had QM set up properly but it really wasn't. It seems to work the way I thought it would. Thanks for directing me to check it again.
