how to make a PDF file?

I need to turn a .doc file created in microsoft word into a pdf. This file is destined for printing, and will bnever be viewewd on a computer screen. Therefore I need the PDF optimisec for print rather than screen. All images have been scaled down quite a bit and well over 300 dpi is available. It will be printed off at staples (won't be really high quality, it's just a program for a stage production).

I have OO.o (OpenOffice.org) installed here, and it does have the ability to create a pdf. However, I've heard that it's not the best for the purpose. If anyone has any tips on creating PDFs pr knows where good software an be found, that would be a big help.

I have had no experience with it.
I would use Adobe Acrobat that allows all kinds of settings. Web, Email, Print etc
Also you can use profiles supplied by your printer to produce the document
