i have a photo that i edited previously. when winxp shows the thumbnail, it shows the unedited version of the photo, since i do not have the original anymore, is it possible to get photoshop to give me back the origiinal since it shows up in the xp thumbnail?

No. The thumbnail is saved separately as meta-data in the PSD. There's a quirk (I don't recall the exact details) where the old thumbnail still shows.
