HELP!? I need to know how much to charge?

I got a request to build a website, and its my first "paid" website job that I've been offered.

Its a really simple website, with 5-7 pages for an e-commerce site, and I have NO idea what the standard would be to charge him for something like this...I dont even have a ballpark figure to throw at him!

I was wondering if anyone could help me out on thiss? Suggestions? Ballpark figure?

Well, I'm a highly experienced print media graphic designer, but i'm new to webdesign.

Since I'm a beginner I'm wondering if it would be better to start out with like...$50 per page or something like that??

Depends on the exact details and what they are expecting you to do. E.g. are you going to be uploading everything, and sorting out the e-commerce side of things too? or is it just for the design only? Make a list of what is involved (maybe with the clients help) and make a guestimate as to how much time you think it will take.

Yes you are definiteley going to need to look at the amount of time you are going to have to expend, i.e coding, graphical design, etc. rather than on a per page basis. I definiteley agree with shane that you need to get an idea of the scope of the project and what the client wants from the end product.

do it based on a per hour charge, dont tell the client but figure what it would be roughly. say you want 10.00 for each hour and you expect it to take you 20 hours... so on and so forth. Plus if there are any other fees you may accrue.

This is just my own experience, and with just one company.
I was offered 1500 to design a site for a company my grandma worked at. They developed and manufactured medical products.
but they had offered this price to me because it was 1/2 to 1/3 what some of the companies were asking. They had also planned to pay me for upkeep on a monthly basis.
as i said, that's just my own experience

I had that problem when I first started with web design back in 2000, but I charge them depending on how much time it took me, I don't charge per hour, I charge for the work I did, usually a site that's 5-7 pages html... 900 - 1000, a flash webiste 5-7 pages... 1500 - 3000.

Now, those prices would be for just plain sites, no e-commerce... Prices would go up depending on the the quantity of the products.

A nice tip... if you speak any other language besides english, suggest your customer to have their site in both languages, specially if it's spanish... I speak spanish and I almost charge double for translating the entire site to spanish.

The hispanic community is growing, depending on what kind of business you have, whatever you are selling, shoes, shirts, food, computers, socks, underwear, cameras, cups, houses, animals, medicine... if your site's in english, you'll make $$ if your site's in english AND spanish, you'll make $$$$$

better believe it.

Something that helps me out greatly in this regard is the Pricing Guide for Web Services by Robert Brenner. It breaks everything down by service, location, etc.
