I'm working on this image:
http://sprites.fireball20xl.com/SSA/Sheets/sonicth.png

Each individual pic of sonic needs to be cut out and placed on it's own 40x40 pixel image. I have made an action so all I have to do is make a marquee and press f2. When I made tha action I saved as sonic_01.gif. Every timer I run the action it saves as sonic_01copy.gif. I want it to save as sonic_01, sonic_02, sonic_03, etc...

Does anyone know how to get it to work properly?

thanks
-travis

Automate>Batch?
That offers sequential numbers for file names from an action.

Well, as far as I know a batch command involves runing the same action on many images, and yes in that case it would sequentially number. However, in my case i want to turn one LARGE image into many SMALL sequentially numbred ones. Basically, I want to make a selection of 40x40px, press the action and have the selection saved as an image called sonic_01.gif. then I want to mvoe my marquee over a bit, press the action button again and this time have it produce sonic_02.gif, and so on and so forth...

Maybe there's some way to make it ask me for a save name every time it saves?

-thanks for your replies

Yes, just to the left of the Save part of your Action, click the little box to Toggle dialog on/off.
