Help says that to get out of Free Transform mode, you click twice inside the box. I can't seem to make that work. What is the trick?

When you say get out of, does that mean you changed your mind and don't want to do the transform. If so, there is cancel symbol in the tool bar. top right...Or just hit the Esc key.
To accept the transform, you can double click inside it, hit enter, or click the commit tranform check mark in the top right tool bar (beside the cancel symbol).
