I have some photos in Photoshop I want to drop in a brochure done in Illustrator. Rather than a hard, sharp edge how do I go about "softening" the edge? What is this effect called?

What you're talking about is feathering..Use the marquee tool, rectangle, and select inside the photo the area you want to keep, then go to selection, feather, and enter the amount you want to feather..

I think then, you may have to copy and paste to see it feathered, if you can't see it then..
