This is the effect I am trying to achieve (a really cool fire effect). The problem is, I am making a graphic with a background of #343722, and the steps in changing image format give color to the fire shape but change the background as well. I want the fire color, but i don't want the entire image (background) color to change. It flattens the image, so I'm having a hard time keeping the BG seperate.

I'm askin the photoshop wizards here how to do this. Any ideas how to get around this?
