I think the family and friends are good advertisers too :)
I started my first site as a karate one and used it in order to learn something about how it's done. I've changed the layout 5 times and fortunatelly each new change was better.
After that my BF said his brother in law could use a site for his firm. I did it. I've made my BF a site with his collection of old coins (he didn't have to pay for it Big Wink ) ... the firm he works at wanted a site, and after all the work I've made a second on for me (with my portfolio).

Try to let everybody know about your occupation and make sure you sell your work as good as you can at that certain moment. Admitting you are still learning is nice, but make sure there isn't anyone there to take advantage. No matter how "beginner" you are, your work SHOULD BE PAYED.

Those sites look great. How long has it been since you started you designing? How did you get into it?

Now you flattter me :)
I've started the dojo project in March 2002. I wanted to learn some webdesign, but I needed a motif. So I thought I could make a Karate site. I was very informed since I had 4 months under my belt Big Grin
I read many things about the subject and decided to give it a go. I was a beginner, but it didn't mean I couldn't think or understand. So I made a layout from a predefined page in Front Page. Awful program :)
After some time I said to myself the looks don't matter. The site was supposed to be an ecyclopedia, not a design class ... after some time I saw other sites and got very sad seeing my "baby" was the ugliest of all.
I turned to Macromedia Dreamweaver (my friend since then) and the images were made in Ulead Photoimpact (easier to use than Photoshop). I have changed layouts many times and this one has been on-line for 3-4 months. I switched to Photoshop and started learning from my mistakes. The layers are difficult to manage as a beginner, but the results are really nice.

My BF's site ... the numismatic collection .. was made using Photoimpact, since I have a lot of images to cut and arrange (the coins) and it's easier for this job. I find Photoshop to be more difficult tu use when you want to cut and drag something and make it a new image. Photoimpact is more suitable for the "raw" work.
