Friends -- new to the forum, thanks in advance for the help.
I have a strange issue that I can't seem to solve.
Windows XP with SP2 and all updates.
Dual AMD Athlon 1600, 1GB Ram, 128mb ATI Video Card. 120gb / 8MB Cache 7200 RPM Western Digital system drive holding OS and Photoshop CS, 120gb / 8mb cache / 7200 RPM drive used only for Photoshop scratch disk.
Each week to update a website I retouch about 400 TIFF format photos. Usually 1500 x 1000 pixels, coming in at about 4.2mb each.
Each is grouped into sets of 25 within their own folder on C: drive.
I open them 25 at a time. To do so I hold down CTRL and tap the "O" key. I'm given the open file dialog box, I click the first image, hold down SHIFT and click the last file. Instantly all files are highlighted and I click the "OPEN" button and they all open just fine. It takes 30-45 seconds for all 25 to be open and ready.
The problem starts later. After all images have been adjusted as I want them and saved / closed, Photoshop is running but has no images open. I use Windows Explorer or ACDSee to "COPY" all 25 images to a different folder on the same C: drive.
The copies are made in the other folder so I can add a logo in the corner, and batch them to 3 sizes (1500x1000, 750x500, 120x80) of JPGs. I don't want the logo on the original just retouched images so I can back them up to CD, and maybe months or years later use them for another project with a different logo.
This is where the issue starts.
When I try to open the copies from the second folder it takes a long, long time.
I open them 25 at a time. To do so I hold down CTRL and tap the "O" key. I'm given the open file dialog box, I click the first image, hold down SHIFT and click the last file, just like described above... BUT.... after clicking the first image, then the second, it can take as long as 30 seconds for the highlight to show. Then, clicking the OPEN button takes at least another 20-30 seconds before the first image opens.
It takes as long as 5-7 minutes for all 25 to open and be ready for the logo action.
Photoshop does the actiion just fine. No slowness there at all, just the file opening issue.
Running the next action involves opening each file (copy) from the second folder, resizing, and saving as JPGs. Opening them is SLOW as heck and takes 10 minutes or more to do all 25, but the action once the file is open is fine.
The issue is the opening. Why is it soo slow......?
Take Note.... The issue was here. The computer was redone, reload OS and all... from fresh format drives.... in the spring and the issue didn't show up for about 2 months and it just gets worse and worse.
Take Note.... It is only Photoshop CS. I tested the same files (copies in second folder) in WinZip, Paint Shop Pro and others. No probelm. Highlighting and clicking open and the speed of opening (PSP) was all normal and quick....

I'd be guessing that clipboard is using up too much memory, plus you have opened acdc and or explorer and they might be still running in the background, why not use a batch action on the original file of pics to resize to the 3 sizes add your logo and save to seperate folder ? you could do it so as to leave the originals untouched. Wayne
The logo can't be placed on the images in a standalone action. I need to image open on screen to decide which corner to place the logo. I have 4 action buttons to handle that.
In any case, its not the actions. The act of highlighting file names in the OPEN FILE dialog box, and then opening the files.
19k webcam JPGs, or 4.1mb TIFF files, that problem is the same.
The idea of creating an action to do it without making copies is a good one, but it doesn't solve the problem. I'd still like to know why it does it.
If I reformat the drive, reinstall Windows XP, and reinstall CS, the probelm is not there.... after a month or so it starts to show up a little and then progressively gets worse and worse until, like now, its almost unbearable.
Almost like CS is keeping some log file and after time the log gets too big.

CS does keep a log type file now you mention it, the path in windows is.
local disk C/documents and settings/your name/adobe/file browser/cs
I delete these every so often without any problems, although I suggest you cut and paste them to an empty folder the first time just in case, then see if PS runs ok before deleting them. (safety first! lol) Wayne

It had 688 files, 78.8mb total. Each file named after a folder within my workflow. The specific file for my "working folder" was several MB by itself (built up over time), which explains why the images in that folder are slow to highlight in dialog boxes and thus to open, when the same images in a new folder are not that way.
Photoshop CS is now very fast, and all open dialog boxes are as they should be.
