Eraser problems (Not Responding)

I have just got Photoshop 7 up and running, everythings fine, apart from when i use the eraser/brushes on say any size image, photoshop freezes and the program states its "Not Responding". I think ive sorted any possible HD/memory probs, but this keeps happening, has anybody any suggestions. Matt.
