I'm very new to photoshop. I open two images and want to cut out a bit from one and transfer it to the other. when i do that, the outline of the cut shows up, not the full image. what am i doing wrong?

Make sure you copy and paste the right selection highlighted by your working path not the inverse of it.

also, once you've selected the part of the image you want to transfer, make sure the move tool is selected before you drag across to the other image, or you'll only move across the selection like you were saying.
failing that, you can always to the classic cut n paste...
