CS4 startup hangs at Scanning for Plug-ins

I'm running Photoshop CS4 on Mac OS X 10.6.8. It was worked OK previously (using a student access key) but recently had to re-install. Now, when I try to fire up the software, I get the plash screen, which halts at the "Scanning for Plug-ins" stage. I get the coloured spinning beach ball, but then nothing happens. I've tried uninstalling/re-installing but this has no effect.

Any ideas?
